Built by the great Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for his most beloved ‘Begum’ or wife Mumtaz, the Taj Mahal is icing in the cake when it comes to the Indo-Islamic style of architecture. It took about 22 years to complete this splendid structure. According to trusted historical sources, Shah Jahan had also wanted to build another historical monument duplicating the Taj, on the opposite side of the original structure, but couldn’t start the construction due to financial constraints and the rising power of his son and future Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, who imprisoned him for the rest of his life.
